About Vent?

Vent? is proudly powered by WordPress. If you’re looking into starting your own blog, and, like me, you don’t want another standard blog, or you want a little more control, I would DEFINITELY recommend you check out WordPress. It’s not as devilishly simple as it it makes itself out to be, but once you get the hang of it (and I gotta admit- it takes a little while), it does everything you want it to- and more. Click below if you want to check it out.

In trying to set up a regular, topic-based website, I have also tried using Drupal and Joomla (both are Content Management Systems, while WordPress is a blogging platform), as well as writing all code from scratch. Drupal is quite comprehensive, but also extremely complicated (for me, at least). I could figure it out, I just didn’t want to. Joomla seems a lot more straight forward, and when I finally release my next site onto the world, it will likely be using Joomla. And writing all of the code? Time consuming, difficult, and extremely frustrating. But also quite satisfying (strangely). My wife’s website is done in this way. If you take the effort, look into using some kind of HTML editor, because it’ll get WAY out of hand REALLY quickly. If you just wanna set up a blog, and you don’t want to worry too much about how it’s all done, just use WordPress. Once you figure it out (it’s much easier than the others), you’ll be very happy.

The WordPress theme used on this page (Blue-box-01) was originally designed by Bob, based on the popular Kubrick theme. I have made my own changes, of course, but the basic layout hasn’t changed. The photo in the banner was taken at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, near Tokyo, Japan. It was taken by myself, but is of an artwork to be found therein. If anybody knows the name of the artist, please contact me so that correct credit can be given.

For my web hosting needs, I use the free host 110mb.com… I have tried another service- which will remain unnamed, and although I had no major problems with them, I found the service was inconsistent. 110mb has been quite good, and for a once-off nominal fee, you can upgrade your account if need be (you need to upgrade it in order to use WordPress- but it’s only around $20US). For the time being, while my site is in its infancy, 110mb will suit me nicely. In future though, I will probably be looking to purchase a domain of my own and use a paid host, but we shall see if that’s necessary! Click the banner below for more info about 110mb.
