Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

Singin’ and stuff

September 8th, 2008 Posted in Personal

Just watching Australian Idol and thinking about stuff… Aussie Idol’s not exactly the best show on TV — it certainly isn’t for everyone and in reality, I don’t like it that much. I don’t much like the songs that are sung, and so on, nor the fact that most winners go on to become very little, or at the most release a pretty crap album. It’s a bit sad really, and goes to show that the show really just uses people for ratings and doesn’t care much for them. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about. I just wanted to say that singing is fun, and it’s becoming popular.

Think about it — who doesn’t listen to a song on the radio and sing along when they’re alone? Who doesn’t get into their favourites and let loose once in a while? If you don’t, you need to pull the stick out of your ass and relax a bit. Put your feet up, get a glass of whiskey into ya, and stop worrying about the rest of the world for a moment. Because having a sing is therapeutic, and we all get into it, just maybe not in public.

But now comes SingStar. Already huge in Australia and Europe, and released in America too late to build a fan base before the release of Rock Band… Which is arguably much better… Anyway, they are for different audiences, but still, SingStar is pretty popular — mostly amongst young women, but also amongst any drunk person at a party… If you haven’t tried it, give it a go. It’s a bit of a laugh.

Of course, later in the year, Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band will be released in Australia, which will be popular amongst young guys, and drunk people at parties. We will be set, and the world will get into singing and screwing around with music. A beautiful thing.

But what we need is Japanese-style karaoke rooms. Not the bar-and-stage style that came and failed in the 90s, but the soundproofed (well, partially) room for just you and your mates to drink and sing in. Of course, another problem is the price of entertainment in Oz — it’s just not going to happen for the same price. You won’t be able to book a room for 3 hours for $40 for two people including all-you-can-drink alcohol. It’s not going to happen. Then there’s the youth of Australia. There are far too many turds here that think graffiti and destruction is a fun and acceptable part of modern society. Sigh. Idiots. Ruining all the fun for everyone.

So yeah, it’s probably never going to happen. We’ll never get what they have in Japan, so I recommend getting into it if you ever go for a visit. And give it more than an hour — you have to get a little drunk before you really get into the music… Or at least limber up a little… Then it gets hard to leave.

Of course, it’s not for everyone, but the truth is, the only people I’ve known that haven’t liked karaoke are those that think a little bit too much of themselves, or just absolute party poopers that don’t know how to have fun…I don’t know, it just works out that way! There are those that don’t like to sing, but they still go, and they still let loose, or at least have fun. Then there are people like me, that LOVE it… I can sing some songs, but I’m terrible at others, and I still LOVE it.

Anyway, I personally couldn’t get up on stage and do Australian Idol. I’m not that interested, for one. I don’t really want to be a rock star (anymore)… I just can’t be stuffed, to be honest! Plus I don’t have ‘it’. You have to have ‘it,’ apparently, and I don’t know what ‘it’ is.

And hey — I really love SingStar (but I friggin’ HATE their stupid song choice! Release a good song for once!), and I will SO buy Guitar Hero World Tour on the day it’s released (especially considering Tool has been announced in the setlist… Drool — it is as good as BOUGHT), but it’s just not the same at home. You can’t be as loud because of the neighbors (of course, that doesn’t stop us too much), some people have to drive and just can’t get blotto… I guess I just miss the old days — but they’re gone, man! Let them go, old fella! Move forth into the blistering sunset! Spread your wings! Embrace the future and new experiences!

Ahem.
