Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

PixelJunk Eden & Grimm

August 2nd, 2008 Posted in Games

Hey. Sorry I haven’t been around for a day or two, but I have had a new puty to attend to and make my bitch, and I had a presentation to attend last night, so I’ve been a little lazy. New computer is grand, far better than the old, but as it turns out, I am typing this up on the old feller… That is, the old puty. Mihoko is playing with the new one tonight. And what else is new? Oh, I finally have a computer that can handle games, so I installed GameTap — service review coming soon to this very page. As a result, I have had the opportunity to sample part of the first episode of American McGee’s Grimm. On top of that, PixelJunk Eden was released today on PSN, and without a thought otherwise, I paid the $13-odd bucks and grabbed it. So what do I think of these new titles?

Well, let’s start with Grimm. It’s a really interesting concept. Walk around a town and corrupt everything in it. In reality, it could have played like Katamari Damacy, but it turned out far simpler than that title. Which is both a good and bad thing. Good because it intends to be simple, bad because it’s possibly too simple… Perhaps it needs more depth. But for a free (well… future episodes will be filed under ‘cheap’) game, it’s definitely worth it. The biggest niggle? The controls are terrible! Sure, my mouse is probably overly sensitive, and I need to fix that, but the view was all over the shop… Probably because my new puty is so damn ace and speedy, I reckon… hehe…

And how about PixelJunk Eden? Well, to be honest, with all the hype and mountains of praise being shovelled upon this game I had high hopes, and I was very excited to find it was available. After playing it now for about an hour, I gotta say… I wish I tried the demo first because I probably wouldn’t have purchased it. Sure — it’s fun, it’s novel, it looks great, and so on and so forth, but it’s just so damn frustrating!  Again, it comes down to the controls, and perhaps they just take some getting used to, but I’m not sure. It looks funky and plays well, but when you miss your target repeatedly, there has to be something wrong. Of course, that could just be me. I’m pretty impatient, and it seems like a game that requires a steady hand, a sharp eye, and a whole lot of patience. That said, I’m gonna play some more and see what I think. I paid money for it, now I gotta at least get my money’s worth.

Sleepy now… Want to play some more (want to download Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2, as well…), but just can’t do it… Can’t keep the old eyelids open…
