A new toy cometh
July 28th, 2008 Posted in Gadgets, PersonalYes, soon a new toy will be delivered, and I will finally be free from the constraints of a crap computer. So that you all know and can empathise, I have until now been using an HP Omnibook 6000 — which in itself is not a bad thing! It’s done its job, and it’s done it well… enough. But let’s take a look at the specs, shall we?
It’s a Pentium 3, and runs at a blisteringly fast 644MHz, enough to burn out your eyes if you’re not careful with it, let me tell you. Supporting that kind of speed requires memory, and this baby was built to handle the least processor-greedy programs around — a masterful 256mb of RAM means you can use one program, and occasionally it will even run smoothly! Oh, what a world.
In this crazy world of huge programs and so much downloadable crap, it’s good to have a 60GB HDD for peace-of-mind — I’m sure I could fit a whole years worth of pictures on it! There’s also a CD drive that actually PLAYS real CDs! And — to top it all off — there’s one of those annoying red buttons in the center of the keyboard; so pleasantly placed that you will often find yourself pressing it rather than the button you were after, and you will neglect it’s oh-so-useful function — it can act like a mouse if you caress it like a stiff nipple. Yep. A useful bit of sandpaper if there ever was one. You may sense the slight note of sarcasm, if you are astute. OK, the 15″ screen is one good point.
As thankful as I am for having this computer (or I would have gone INSANE), I am so glad that I should be getting a new one tomorrow. Or the day after. Let’s shoot for the day after to avoid disappointment. Wait, I should remember the GTA4 disappointment — let’s shoot for August.
The new toy will be an Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue. Why companies need to come up with lame-ass names for computers I’ll never know, but I’m sure it’s for the same reason that car manufacturers seem to feel the same need when naming cars. Anyway, the Gemstone Blue is far superior to my current machine… Housing a Core2Duo processor running at 2.5GHz, it should run nicely, supported by 3GB of DDR2 RAM. The video card isn’t the greatest in the world, but I didn’t buy it for Crysis. The 320GB HDD should be all I need (along with my external, it’ll all be good), and the Blu-Ray player might get a look-in here and there — but the DVD-burner is what I have been waiting for… Finally, I don’t need to rely on others to make CDs and DVDs!! Yay world!
Then there’s the sexy 18.4″ widescreen monitor — full 1080p resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio means that if I actually do use the Blu-Ray player, it will be worth it. And the 5.1 Dolby Surround? That just makes it even cooler. Although I’m not entirely sure I will be reying on that… I have yet to see a notebook that doesn’t require external speakers… We shall see. Sigh… It’s gonna be good… Of course, it’s gonna be heavy, too, but I didn’t buy it to take it with me everywhere. There’s a reason they call these “Desktop Replacements.”
There’s also a fingerprint reader, how cool is that? I am gonna read the shit outta my fingers! You can read yours too, if you come over and try it out! Please come over and try it out… We can race our recently read fingers!
Anyway, check out my new awesomeness here. If I don’t post tomorrow, please understand, and be happy for me. Because I know I’ll be damnwell happy! As Larry!
Hang on, why do I say these things? Who is Larry? Why do I feel the need to tell everyone I feel just as happy as he does (or she, I guess)? Who gives a crap how happy Larry is? Whatever the case, although I’ll be thinking very carefully about who this mysterious ‘Larry’ is, I’ll be pretty damn happy!

Nice work! New Lappys rock! I have had mine for 2 months and i want a new one!!!
I didn’t know you got a new one recently!
At least now you might understand why I complain about mine so much, Janny, my boy!
But sigh… I jinxed myself. I’m possibly looking at Thursday… Fingers crossed for tomorrow, because it certainly didn’t come today like I expected! (shakes fist at ceiling, then wonders why)
