GH vs RB: A winner arises from the set lists? Maybe

July 25th, 2008 Posted in Games

Winner?Last week, during E3, the set list for Rock Band 2 was released. I didn’t post about it, mainly because I didn’t have time, and also because I didn’t think it was worth it. I’ve gotten so excited about Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour that I just feel jaded about it all now. The news has gotten to a saturation point where I just couldn’t deal. So I kind of ignored that news.

Well, I’m bringing it out now, because a (rumoured) copy of the GH set list has been leaked. It may not be real, but if it is even just a little bit on the money, then I think I know what game I’ll be choosing. Let’s look at what I like about the both of them.

Looking at Rock Band 2 first, I need to be honest and say straight out — I wasn’t impressed by this list, and that’s another reason why I didn’t post about it. To me, there just isn’t much to get excited about. OK… what’s good about it? Jimmy Eat World, Jane’s Addiction, Beck, Motorhead, Soundgarden, System of a Down, Survivor, Dinosaur Jr, and of course, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns’n'Roses, and Pearl Jam.

Sounds like a fair few songs impressed me, right? Sure, but some of those are not songs that blew me away, just bands I wanted to see, but not necessarily the songs I wanted to play/sing (Rage Against the Machine “Testify” — good song, but… there are many other’s in the Rage repertoire I would prefer). Some of them (Soundgarden “Spoonman,” for example) are songs I think are awesome, but might not translate to a music game so well. Lot’s of WTF moments, though, but that might be a function of my taste, so I won’t go into that…

And how about Guitar Hero World Tour’s set list? OK, let me be honest. If this set list is real, I’m getting Guitar Hero. I mean, look at it — there’s the staples (G’n'R, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers, SoaD, and so on), and there’s some crap (you gotta cater to everyone, I guess), and then there are the deciders (for me at least) — Tool ($#!t yeah!), The Doors, Pink Floyd (AWESOME!), Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, Slayer, Jimi Hendrix… just… Wow! Great list… If it’s real. And you know what? With Rock Band’s established DLC, it HAS to be this good, because some of these songs are already available for Rock Band (and I’m aware of that). But if the songs are gonna be this good from the start, then the DLC should just get better and better…

Well, that’s what I’d like to think. Of course, the fact that Rock Band still hasn’t found it’s way down under has made me more than a little dismissive of anything announced by Harmonix, but I am still open to the possibility that it will be… cheaper and released first. Scratch the released first part. Let’s see if it even gets released. Might be that we just be RB2 right off the bat. Which seems OK to me. Because I’ll probably get Guitar Hero.

Update: As was to be expected, I guess, the Guitar Hero World Tour set list hasd turned out to be a fake. Of course, the possibility still remains that many of the songs are correct. Sigh… Back to the frustration… BUT — if the GH set list is anything like this, I will be very likely to favour it (i.e., Activision, this is the way to go, aim for it… Several Tool songs + Pink Floyd would just about do it for me)…
