Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

Aussies pay heaps more for games

July 21st, 2008 Posted in Games, News

A few weeks back, I linked to an article about how we Aussies pay more for digitally-distributed software and music and the like, and commented on how we needed someone to look into hard copies as well.

Well, it happened. Not because I sked for it, of course… But still. A couple of days back, I found this article at the Sydney Morning Herald site. It’s not a lengthy investigation into pricing in Australia, but it’s effective as a quick overview that points out how much more we actually pay. And the example they use is one I’ve been touting to my friends for a while now — order your games online, and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than going in to a store for it. Sometimes up to half the price for a brand new game, and that’s ridiculous.

The other thing they point out there is that it’s the distributors fault for the pricing — on one hand, if the distributors have the exclusive right to sell these games in Australia, they have little need/desire to want to drop their prices. On the other hand, it can’t be totally the fault of the distributor. I think there’s secrets afoot. If the ACCC are out there to help out the consumer, they need to look into this, as there is really no valid reason why we pay so much for games. Someone’s making a lot of money from our hobby. Jerks.
