Weekend BBQ: Turkey Leg
July 13th, 2008 Posted in Weekend BBQ
Yes, I know, I’ve been a bit slack with the weekend BBQ posts recently, but here goes…
This week, we went to the market, as we usually do, and we decided (OK, Mihoko decided) to try out a turkey leg on the BBQ. It wasn’t that cheap, but it was huge, so I thought it might be worth a shot.
Well, dammit. My family never really ate turkey while I was growing up, so I didn’t know what to expect, but if this isn’t my new favourite BBQ food, then I don’t know what is. Great flavour, soft, fatty meat — what more could you ask for? OK, there are a whole bunch of strange cartilaginous bones in there, but those aside, this was one of the best simple BBQs I’ve cooked in a while, but it did take some time. Finished product below.
Due to its size, it does need to be cooked very slowly, and not over direct flame or directly on the hotplate, or it’ll burn (unless that’s your thing). It almost needs to be roasted, and it takes a looooong time (our one leg took about two hours, but by that time it was cooked to PERFECTION). The other bonus of roasting it for that long is that it creates a great environment to cook the chips in… In fact, they also turned out friggin’ kick-ass awesome (and extra crispy to boot). Try it, you should.
Oh, and for the record, the meat on that plate was then distributed over two plates, otherwise we wouldn’t be with you right now to share this (but it was still a big meal)…
