TV coming to PlayStation 3
June 27th, 2008 Posted in Gadgets, GamesI’ve been out of Oz for some time now, and as a result, I am not much of a TV watcher anymore. In Japan, I watched most of my favourite shows streaming online — not the most legitimate of methods, but I had to get access to my shows somehow! Since returning to Oz, I haven’t had much of a chance to watch much TV, but I have wanted to… So I’ve missed out on a hell of a lot.
If I was American, I could have gone home not only to TiVo, but also to the awesome stylings of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace (seriously, that thing is glorious). Then there’s netflix; US iTunes had TV shows for a long while (but Oz got them recently… well, some shows at least); and Australia is STILL locked out of the official South Park streaming site… Seriously, we get the short end of the stick for everything (see empty Xbox Live Video Marketplace for proof). Well… things are about to change.
For the rest of the world, of course. Yep, TiVo is coming soon to Oz, Foxtel iQ is already here, and iTunes just got TV shows, but what I’m referring to is Play TV and the PSN video store. Play TV, a Digital Video Recorder for your PS3, WILL (apparently) be coming to Oz, and not the US (or such was the case last I heard about it), but it may not be coming soon. Looking to be released at the end of the year for (hopefully) less than $200, it might not work with my J-PS3… Sigh. See the Wikipedia Play TV page for more info.
The Playstation video store refers to the movie download service that is soon to be available on the US PSN (check this Gizmodo article for details). Definitely for movies, but likely for TV shows as well, it’s due in the US this winter (summer for those northies), then Europe and Japan after that.
There was a time that I used to think of Aussies as falling under the broad umbrella of ‘Europe’ (because we always seemed to get the updates, etc., at the same time), but since the recent Rock Band debacle (it has been released in Europe, but there is not even an official nod towards Australia… Jerks), I have changed my opinion on that and think we will probably be overlooked again. Of course, Xbox Live Video Marketplace has arrived in Europe (not sure what’s available though), and is still dead in Oz, so that’s another nail in the coffin. What the hell is holding us back? Antiquated laws? Bureaucracy? Whatever it is, it’s giving me the shits.
