Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

What’s up with System of a Down?

June 20th, 2008 Posted in Music

Sorry, this may be old news, but it’s something I’ve been wondering for a while, and I finally pulled my finger out and looked it up…

After not hearing any news about System of a Down for a while, I was beginning to worry. Well, I wasn’t really worrying, I was just thinking “When the hell will SoaD release another album?”

Then I heard a new song, and I recognised the voice of the singer. You see, on the first couple of SoaD albums, the lead singer was primarily Serj Tankian, who, in my opinion, has a very distinct and awesome voice for a rock band. On later albums, the position as lead singer was shared by Daron Malakian, who also has a distinct voice, but not quite as perfect for rock as Tankian. My favourite songs by SoaD have always been, and always will be, those sung by Tankian — although I must admit that I still like Malakian’s voice, I’m just more of a fan of the vocal stylings of Serj. So, when I heard this new song on the radio, I knew the voice was Serj, but I thought it was a new SoaD album.

Turns out I was wrong. Serj released a solo album, entitled “Elect the Dead.” Haven’t got it myself, but I plan to. Then tonight, I heard another song, and I recognised the singer as Malakian, but the radio announcer mentioned it was a new song by “Daron Malakian’s new project, Scars on Broadway.” Shock turned to fear. Was System of a Down finished? Did they split up?

So I looked up the answer in the best place to do so — Wikipedia. The Wikipedia System of a Down page details what went down, and it turns out it’s not so bad. The band are indeed on hiatus, but they are still on friendly terms (or so it may seem), and they have mentioned the possibility that a new album may be on the cards in future — or not. But the important thing is it might be.

Anyway, I’ve popped up a video for one of my favourite SoaD songs, Toxicity, from the album  of the same name. I’ve also put together a bunch of links to their albums at Amazon. If you are interested, I have to recommend Toxicity and their self-title album. But it’s all good. No promises in regard to Serj Tankian’s album or the Scars on Broadway track (which is a digital download from Amazon), although I’m guessing they aren’t bad… Will have to check them out soon myself!
