Flight of the Conchords on Australian TV

I first watched Flight of the Conchords over the Internet from Japan maybe about a year ago now. I was just cruisin’ about when I came across a page somewhere that was going on about how great it was as a show. So I looked around the net, and found some short clips that were available. I heartily enjoyed them, and, intending to watch as much as I could, wrote the title down on a bit of paper before continuing on to something else.
And you know what? I never ended up watching any more. I thought about it from time to time, but I just never did… Not sure why, because it is an awesome show. For the uninitiated, it’s a show by a couple of New Zealanders — but it’s good! That’s a bad joke, I’ve been quite impressed with what has come out of NZ recently… Bro Town is another show that tickles the funny bone… Anyway, Flight of the Conchords.
The show is about a 2-piece band trying to make it in America. It’s a class act the whole way, not only because they sing a couple of comedic songs during the episode, but also due to their loveable brand of dumb humour. It’s a type of comedy that is somewhat over-utilised these days, but FotC never misses it’s mark — a refreshing change from much of the crap that’s on the telly these days. I highly recommend watching it, but that is if you’re awake late on a Sunday night.
Seriously, Channel Ten, what the hell are you thinking? A new(ish), extremely charming, and (almost) homegrown comedy, and you air it at 10.40pm on a Sunday night? Sure, because that’s when everyone is awake! Surely you’ve heard of a little thing called ‘the start of the working week’? You know, that time when people want to rest before embarking on their much-hated 5-day punishment for joining modern-day society?
I just don’t get it. There MUST be a better time slot. There is so much crap on TV these days — do we really need to watch 5 different versions of CSI? I knew the Australian public were fans of a lot of crap, but since coming back to Oz I have been quite disappointed in television programming. I used to watch so much TV, now I find myself with only one or two shows that I regularly watch, and more recently with one that I will regularly miss, although I will want to watch it. Sure, I’ve heard of video tapes, but I don’t have that kind of old technology. Sigh… OK, my video recorder is broken, and I can’t be assed fixing it…
Anyway, I just don’t understand the logic behind it. Before the show first aired, it was advertising as the huge hit that it was in the US, and the advertisements got a lot of air time, but then they chose a crappy time slot for it (originally 10pm, but now Supernatural is back on, so it has been pushed back by an hour), and it seems to be failing… Geez, I wonder why… Jerks.
