Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

Excited about iPhone in Australia?

June 10th, 2008 Posted in Gadgets

iPhoneI used to be anti-iPod. I was one of those “why be a sheep?”-arguing people, if that makes sense. Then, when the time came to actually purchasing an mp3 player, I found that iPod was the only machine that suited my needs at the time (particularly space and price). So I purchased a 60 Gb iPod Photo. A couple of weeks later, iPod Video was suddenly released onto the world- 80 Gb and cheaper than the one I purchased. I was pissed, especially given that the 60 Gb iPod Photo was a faulty product at best (luckily I purchased a 3-year warranty… 4 iPods later, I have a possibly fault-free one). I was upset, but still- I was also transformed into an iPod fan. So, now the iPhone comes to Australia — do I want one?

The answer is, of course, convoluted. One, I don’t need one. I have a 60 Gb iPod, why would I want less space? Two, and most importantly, I don’t use my iPod outside of my home anymore. I have my wicked Bose SoundDock that my iPod is permanently affixed to. And C, I have a Nokia N95 — I already have a capable phone.

But damn it if I don’t want the shit out of an iPhone. In part, it’s because I am a tech geek, and I need to have the best. OK, it’s TOTALLY because of that– but why wouldn’t I want one? It plays music, has a nice sexy screen and OS, and is touchscreen. Recently, they announced some games for it. Want.

And now I’m locked into a 2-year contract. Still over a year to go. And if I want to end my contract, I gots to fork out almost a thousand bucks. And how much is the iPhone going for when it is to be released on July 11? Well, I don’t know, actually, but big Steve Jobs recently announced that it wouldn’t be more than US$199 worldwide (news.com.au for proof). And it will be the new 3G iPhone that will be released in Oz, not the poopy old one.

Of course, if I had one, I would play with it for a day, and that would be the end of it. You have to pay extra for Internet use, so I would rarely use it. I don’t really need an mp3 player. The N95 has a much better camera. And let’s face it, I already have a DS and a PSP that I rarely use, why would I suddenly find the iPod would drag me back into handheld gaming?

Sigh. I just want cool things. I realise how fickle I am. Still…
