Tragedy in Akihabara

June 9th, 2008 Posted in News

You may have heard about the recent stabbing frenzy in Akihabara (if not, see this news.com.au article), and I thought I would put a quick note here, myself. There’s nothing I can add to the details, of course — I’m no reporter, but I just wanted to express my shock. This was a place that I, as a nerd, found myself travelling to with regularity, and I would have thought it was one of the more safe regions in an already safe city.

Of course, things go down, and it can happen anywhere — someone was stabbed not far from where I live, recently, and that didn’t really shock me. I suppose it just comes down to one’s perceptions (or misconceptions, as the case may be). Anyway, that’s all. It’s not the first stabbing incident in Japan, and it’s not the first case of violence in Akihabara, but it’s the scale, I guess, that brought out a reaction in me when I was alerted to the situation this morning.

While grabbing the link above, I also found that the psycho that went crazy in Akihabs also mentioned that he would do it on an Internet bulletin board (again, news.com.au). It’s a crazy, topsy-turvy world we live in. If only it was quick and easy to spot and apprehend these people (and I’m pretty sure I’ve come across a few of these weirdos when playing Halo 3 online, too)… Sigh.
