Weekend BBQ: Lamb Souvlaki

Greek Lamb Souvlaki BBQ

Yes, it’s that time of the week (and yes, I’m trying to gloss over the fact that last week there was a distinct lack of the BBQ), so it’s about time I chuck a picture of this Weekend’s awesome meal. As you can see, we kind of outdid ourselves this time around, crafting a lamb souvlaki– all using homemade ingredients (well, the base ingredients were purchased, of course).

The idea came from the fact that, although BBQ lamb chops are cheap and ubiquitous in Aussie BBQ society, they are kind of boring, plain, and ultra oily. After some consideration, I cut the meat from the bone and fat, marinated it in red wine, fresh mint, olive oil and some other herbs, then kebabified then and BBQ’d them to perfection.

I asked Mihoko to put her bread-making skills to good use, went a little further than necessary and asked for Turkish bread… And she — as usual — did exactly what I asked, and more. Perfect bread, it was. On top of that, I decided that if it was going to be somewhat authentic, we should make some home-made Tzatziki… And I found out that it was much easier than expected (Greek yoghurt, shredded cucumber, crushed garlic, chopped mint, lemon juice, bit of salt and pepper, and leave it in the fridge to infuse). But I went a bit crazy on the garlic. Less next time…

Turned out perfect, and, if you have the time on your hands, it’s a pretty cheap meal, provided you have the ingredients in your fridge. Oh, the round black thing is a mushroom(BBQ mushroom… yum), and the white stuff was a cottage cheese-based salad, with olives, celery, tomato, and cucumber. Overall- wicked tasty, but filling.
