GTA4 Multiplayer: First Impressions
June 8th, 2008 Posted in Games, Reviews
OK, before I go on, I have to say… this is a drunk review (as requested by Jan). What comes out when drunk is often far different than what would be said when sober. I’m not trashed right now (although I do have some stuff I wrote while totally wasted, I might put them online one day for interestin reading… or difficult reading), but I’m a bit out of my head. So let’s see what comes out.
Anyway, GTA4 is great, and you can read my first impressions here. I have, of course, played a lot since then, and my overall consensus is that if you like GTA, then you’ll like this, but if not, try before you buy. You know what? I think it’s amazing that you can type so fast when you’re drunk. Anyway, GTA4 is cool (but it’s still just GTA). So what’s multiplayer like?
GTA4 multiplayer is actually not so different from the single-player game. Same city, same graphics, same radar, same music… It looks the same. The difference is that you are not the only player marked on your map. If you’re in a team, your team members are there. If you’re not, enemies are shown in a different colour. Go there, shoot them. Simple.
Well, not so simple. Some games are simple, for example — Cops and Robbers (basically Good guys vs Bad guys) is a fairly universal idea, which works pretty well in the game! Deathmatch… Team Deathmatch- these ideas are not new, so I’m sure you’ll figure them out… The problem is, though, the cities are so big! After only having played the multiplayer game for less than 2 hours, I think the size of the city is the biggest problem, it can take a while to find where the skirmish is going down. On a smaller scale, the whole “up arrow means the other guy is above you” thing can also be a bit of a pain in the ass… It’s never clear whether you are on the right road or not… Then again, that could also be something that adds to the realism… There’s a friggin’ flipside to everything, isn’t there? Stupid world. Still, these things don’t detract too much from the game.
You know why I endorse it? Because it’s fun. A lot of fun. However, being used to playing Halo, I was used to running from point-to-point — in GTA, the cities are big, and you run too slow, so you gotta use cars, it doesn’t take long to learn that. And driving around and shooting (and trying to run over your target) can be pretty enjoyable.
I think what I’m trying to say (and I’m very quickly learning that drunken reviews are not as good as I thought they would be) is that playing GTA4 multiplayer is a helluva lot of fun. It’s something I want to look further into– after only having played a couple of hours, there’s only so much I can say– especially considering I didn’t get a chance to try out all of the game modes. And really — for me — if I play more than 30 minutes of an online game, it must be pretty good. In fact, I had a great time.
Yep. I’m pretty drunk now.
