The Guitar Hero thot plickens…
June 3rd, 2008 Posted in GamesYes, another Guitar Hero post. Gamespot AU have reported that Guitar Hero: Metallica is in the works, much like Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Of course, the Aerosmith game has been officially announced, whereas the Metallica game has only been announced by Gamespot, so who knows?
Personally, I think Activision are whipping the horse. They know how popular the Guitar Hero franchise is, and rather than release the songs online (where the gaming public will have limited access, as not everyone purchases downloadable content as yet), they want to make sure that everyone is able to purchase the songs they want… For the price of a full game. This makes me worry.
First, I worry about the whole Guitar Hero versus Rock Band thing. Rock Band has a strong set list, with hundreds of songs available as DLC, and songs released on a weekly basis. Guitar Hero, on the other hand, has released songs in a trickle, usually in packs of three, and totalling probably only in the 20s (although I didn’t check… sorry). How can this compete with Rock Band? Well, in Australia, it will probably be released first, if Rock Band is released in Oz at all (see this recent story by the Age, there are some interesting comments there regarding importing as well). For the rest of the world, Guitar Hero has the brand behind it- everyone knows Guitar Hero, but only the hardcore are aware of Rock Band (or those spoilt little rich kids… or the single young men with the dollars to burn… oh, how I envy you).
It just makes me think- which to buy? Do I import Rock Band, risk the faulty equipment, deal with the a lesser drum set (my opinion), and possibly not have access to DLC, or should I grab Guitar Hero: World Tour on its release, and risk having to build on my set list by buying discs that will be full of songs I possibly don’t care about? Either way, I want one the full-band experience in my video games. And the second I hear that you can access the DLC from imported versions of US PS3 Rock Band, well… I will probably try saving for my own little import- the set list wins in the end.
