Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

Weezer demonstrate their Nerd Superiority

May 25th, 2008 Posted in Music

Weezer have once again proven (to me) that they are geniuses. For a long time, I have known of Weezer — I was a big fan of “Undone - The Sweater Song” many years ago, although I never did buy the album… At the time I thought they were just another boring indie band with one good song. Then I got their last album, “Make Believe“, and I was hooked. A lot of folks thought that was too soft for them, but that was part of the charm that shot that album into my all-time top ten favourite albums.

Then comes this video. To be honest, I haven’t seen any other Weezer video except for “Buddy Holly”, which is also super cool. In fact, I’ll pop it here below in case you haven’t seen that one too. The video above, however, is pure genius. Classic Internet references — and even a video game reference or two — some of which were super viral and were sent to virtually everyone connected to the net (and even got themselves on the TV for those that aren’t), and some of which that I hadn’t seen (or maybe I was out of the loop- but you can’t have seen everything, can you?).

What impresses me though is how Weezer has used the actual individuals themselves to great effect- quick appearances, but all tied into the song, and seemingly connected to each other. OK, so a good video is not enough to make an awesome band, but a good song is (and this is a good song). But, of course, I think Weezer IS an awesome band, just under-estimated. And perhaps that’s how they want it to be. Then again, these kick-anus videos are more than you would expect from a band that doesn’t want to hit the top of the pop charts, aren’t they? Screw this, I didn’t want to get into a discussion about that.

Weezer are cool. That is all.
