Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

Guitar Hero World Tour on the horizon, guns blazin’

May 22nd, 2008 Posted in Games

Well, I knew it was happening, but I didn’t know it would be so soon, and I didn’t think it would be so cool. Above, you can watch the (fairly lame) debut trailer for Guitar Hero World Tour. It’s pretty bad, and there’s no in-game footage, but you can see the new guitar, as well as the drum set. And that’s what makes me upset.

The drum set is awesome. Immediately more impressive than Rock Band’s drum set. There are three pads, rather than four, and there are two raised cymbals in addition to the foot pedal. From what I hear, the problem with the Rock Band drum set is the noise, and apparently this is something that Activision are concentrating on for the new set.

Coverage has been (understandably huge, possibly the best I’ve found is 1-up’s article, but you may also enjoy reading Kotaku’s or Joystiq’s. They are all covering the debut trailer, but the comments (while still bursting with pro- and anti- sensibilities) raise a few good points- particularly one regarding whether or not this is god competition, considering bands may be locked into contracts with certain video games… That would suck. Also worth reading is information regarding Rock Revolution- Konami’s entry into the band game format. Their game nixes the microphone, but promises to be the ‘most realistic band game ever’. Whatever- we’re talking about the others at the moment, and personally- I want the microphone.

So, how do I feel about this? Well, it’s gonna cause a few headaches, that’s for sure. For example, if Rock Band comes out first, I will want that bastard- HARD. But should I get it, with GH4 on the way, with a seemingly better drum set? And if I wait for GH4, what if I find the DLC isn’t as awesome as Rock Band, given that GH has released three-song packs, intermittently, while Rock Band releases individual songs for download every week, and already has quite the list going for it? What will I do then? That said, Rock Band 2 may come along and kick GH4’s scrawny, late-to-the-party ass, and it may have a kick ass set of drums, but will I want to open the wallet for them after already filling the living room with the others? That one is probably a big ‘NO’, so I really have to wait and hear about line-ups and DLC, and then there’s still the possibility that Rock Revolution may jump on the microphone bandwagon… It’s all too much for my little brain to take.

With my poor ability to wait, it’s likely I will just get the first thing to be released (at some extravagant price- damn you Australia!) on these shores… And it may be the wrong choice… But damned if I don’t prefer Rock Bands grittier style over Guitar Hero’s cutesy cartoon…

Update: Check out the Press Release at Kotaku. Abso-friggin-lutely awesome. But it’s just the hype so far… Still, might be waiting for Guitar Hero…
