NIN surprises again!
May 6th, 2008 Posted in MusicWhat, what do you know?!? With Ghosts I-IV still cooling on the figurative racks, NIN comes along again and surprises us all with yet another full-length album available for download online- this time FREE. Completely and totally free. No strings attached. On the front page of nin.com at the moment, the current post by Trent reads
“thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one’s on me”
Seriously, the guy kicks ass. But what’s the new album like?
Titled “The Slip”, it weighs in at 10 tracks, running for a total of 43 mins, 47 seconds. Short? Maybe, but many albums run at about that length these days. How does it sound? Well, I haven’t had the opportunity to listen to it in entirety yet! I’m listening while I write this, of course, and the current track– “Lights in the Sky” looks to become a new staple in my NIN play list- it’s a slow, moody track, and I like those. The songs that preceded this one? I must admit, they are a little different! They still have the same trademark NIN-noise, the industrial grind, but the songs themselves are somehow arranged… differently. It’s hard to explain– obviously NIN, and similar to recent releases rather than older NIN, but different still, in its own way.
Going by what I’ve heard, I recommend the album to everyone– especially given that the price is right. And the sign up page? Marketing genius- once you provide your email for your personal download code, you are given the opportunity to add the emails of three friends, to send them their own personal download code, but of course, you don’t have to if you don’t want to. Viral marketing at its best. I applaud the man for all he is doing for the industry; Trent, thank you– for the music, the inspiration, and the balls to give the music companies the massive middle finger.
