Chinese meeting with the Dalai Lama
May 5th, 2008 Posted in NewsFinally, talks have resumed between representatives of China and those of the Dalai Lama, and it seems that they will continue over the next few days.
It’s interesting, you know, looking at how the two sides of the argument have changed. China have, and always will, maintained that Tibet is a part of China (I heard some supporters on the radio when the Olympic torch was being run through Australia mention that Tibet is as much as part of China as Tasmania is of Australia, which is an interesting thing to mention in itself… It leads to a discussion regarding who can really claim rights of any land? If we are going to contest China, then we should certainly contest America and Britain as well…), and that they will not bow to the Dalai Lama’s demands for the country’s independence, while the Dalai Lama is now stating that he is just fighting (for want of a better word) for “increased autonomy”.
But what does that mean, really? It’s a difficult concept. it’s likely to mean something similar to that of Hawaii- a part of America, and yet it has its own identity. Perhaps he is just fighting for his right to be spiritual head of state (while still respecting China’s rule).
Sure, China’s handling of the situation seems to have been violent (although they will never admit to it- but who would?), there are plenty of other countries that are just as guilty- some of which are guilty of it right now. So why do we complain about Tibet?
I’m all for Tibet, don’t get me wrong, and I think China have handled it poorly, but still- we can only say so much without sounding hypocritical.
So I hope the talks are successful, and I hope that the tree-hugging jerks will stop their crusading for a “Free Tibet”, because it’s just not going to happen, China would never allow that.
Anyway… enough thinking for one day… Back to video games! I’m expecting GTA4 to arrive in the post tomorrow! Yay!
