Complaining and praising… Whatever is required

Wii to get its sexy on?

April 22nd, 2008 Posted in Games, News

After reading this post and its associated comments, I find myself in a quandary. It’s a big quandary, but lacking in amenities, so it kind of sucks to be there. Nevertheless, a quandary I am in.

Do I believe? Can I trust the word of a company who state that their new engine will (to quote the linked post) “enable games to be developed that look like Xbox 360 and PS3 titles”. To be honest, I find that to be quite the big, bold statement– High Voltage Software (the company behind it) must have some mighty big kahunas to make such a statement…

So… to add to the joviality… check out this video I found on Youtube. What do you think? My opinion is to be found after choosing to read more. Go on, choose to read more.

OK… it can (and has) been argued that the Wii does not need to match the PS3/Xbox 360, and in the Wii’s defense one could also cite some of the brilliant examples of design used in certain games, “No More Heroes” springs effortlessly to mind. But valid as these arguments may be, they do support the idea that the Wii can’t match up to it’s brawnier brothers. And does this video end all that?

Ummmm, no… to me, that did not look like a PS3 or Xbox 360 game at all. Not even a crappy one. Admittedly, the engine does give the Wii a much-needed kick in the graphics capabilities, but a PS3 game this does not make.

However… when all is said and done… Kudos to the team. I think it certainly does improve on what has come before. The textures are quite nice, the water effects are pretty good (if a little dark in this video), and it all seems to be pretty smooth.

So no, not equal to PS3 and Xbox 360, but an improvement still, at least that’s what i think…
