China, protesters… ?
April 11th, 2008 Posted in NewsWhat to do with China, eh? On one hand, they are a humungous country, with a huge population, that contributes tremendously to import/exports and world economy. On another, they are a humungous country with a huge population, and a long history of violence… The recent uprising regarding Tibetan “freedoms”, or lack thereof, as well as the iron-tight grip the government uses to control its people makes China a scary power in today’s topsy-turvy world.
But who’s to say what’s right these days anyway? Certainly not me- my country follows America around like a lap dog, our new Prime Minister embarrassing the country recently with his ill-advised (more likely “not advised”) ‘joke’… Then there’s America itself, but let’s not go there- the point I’m trying to make is that we are all making stupid mistakes that are simply a repeat of the past- the problem is that China is such a wildcard… Nobody knows their intentions… But again, the same can be said for probably all countries…
I think it comes down to the September 11… Even though I am an Australian, that attack proved very strongly that the world is not the cozy little place we make it out to be, and we aren’t always safe. So now we put up our defenses at the slightest of provocation.
I’m not only referring to our responses to China, but also China’s responses to us. We are all too wary of each other, and it’s strange. Why can’t we all get along? Because it’s human nature- power begets power, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and so on and so forth. We just gotta keep plodding along, and hope we don’t step on anyone’s toes.
And then there’s the Tibet thing… I don’t really want to get into a discussion about Tibet, though… Most people probably think the same thing- and the drum has been beaten (repeatedly, by all and sundry). But the recent disruptions to the Olympic Torch relay are disgusting, in my opinion. China may very well be hosting the Olympics, but the Olympics are a separate entity to China. Carrying the olympic torch is a great honour for many of the people in the torch relay, and this reaction is a demonstration of the stupidity of protesters- don’t get me started on protesters (who are also jerks).
Yes- FREE TIBET (there, I said it); yes- China is pretty scary… but we are all at fault in some way, there must be better ways to deal with life’s problems. That’s why I say- let the politicians do their job. They may be absolute knobs most of the time (OK, they are just plain knobs), but it’s their job to look after the country. Vote, complain- try to influence their decisions, for sure, because they are definitely making some bad decisions, and are certainly the one’s standing on toes– but protesters are cocks.

So keeping on this topic, how do you feel about Rudd publicly criticizing the Chinese?
There is one thing he didn’t follow George.
